Elton

Elton is an English surname taken from a place name commonly explained as Ella’s town or settlement. The ending belongs to the old English vocabulary for an enclosed settlement, while the first part preserves a personal name. Its history is therefore geographical, connecting a family with a place rather than literally describing an old town.

Musician Elton John made the name internationally recognizable, adopting Elton in tribute to saxophonist Elton Dean. That story provides an unusually clear example of one bearer passing a name’s association to another. As a first name, Elton can carry a musical tribute, an ancestral surname, or a connection with a particular place, while retaining the straightforward two-syllable form of the older surname.
