Elvin

Elvin belongs to an old English name family in which the final element means friend. Its history overlaps with more than one earlier compound, including names associated with noble and elf elements. That makes “noble friend” a familiar interpretation, while “elf friend” belongs to another possible strand of the family rather than being a contradiction to hide.

Jazz drummer Elvin Jones gives the name a memorable musical association. Elvin’s compact form also sits alongside Elwin and Elwyn, spellings that make parts of the older family more visible. It has the feel of a vintage first name with a substantial linguistic past, and its friend element supplies a warm meaning beneath the firm consonants.
