Elvira

Elvira has an old Spanish history and was borne by members of medieval royal families. Its meaning is uncertain, with possible Germanic elements proposed; the familiar translation white or fair is not securely established. The name’s historical use is a firmer part of its story than any one attractive gloss.

Elvira appears in opera and theater, including the Don Juan tradition and Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit. The film Elvira Madigan adds another artistic association, while the television character Elvira gives it a more recent gothic image. These varied references show that the name’s identity is much broader than one modern character or a single style of storytelling.
