Ema

Ema is an established single-m form of Emma used in several European languages. Through Emma, it connects with a Germanic element traditionally interpreted as whole or universal. Ema also occurs as a Japanese name, where the meaning depends on the characters used rather than on the European name’s history.

The short Latin-letter spelling can therefore represent distinct naming traditions. A family using the European form may prefer the spelling familiar in its language, while a Japanese family’s chosen characters supply the specific meaning. Neither route requires inventing a combined translation from every possible character or treating the single m as an incomplete version of Emma.
