Emelina

Emelina belongs to the Emmeline and Emeline family, traced through medieval forms to Germanic names containing amal. The element is often explained as work, though its earliest meaning is debated. Historical records include an Emelina in thirteenth-century England, so the form has a documented life well before modern interest in longer names ending in lina.

Emelina is also used as a Spanish form of Emmeline, illustrating how an older family of names can settle into different languages. The similar-looking Emilia has a separate history, and its usual explanation should not simply be added to Emelina. For parents, the strongest story is the combination of a documented medieval form and a continuing European name family, with appropriate uncertainty about the oldest root.
