Enoch

Enoch is a Hebrew biblical name traditionally interpreted as “dedicated.” More than one person bears it in Genesis, including a son of Cain and the ancestor associated with Methuselah. The latter figure also stands at the center of later religious writings known as the books of Enoch, whose status differs among religious traditions.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem Enoch Arden gives the name an additional literary association. Its two-syllable English form is compact but has a long history behind it. Families choosing Enoch can identify the biblical or literary connection they intend rather than treating every reference to the name as the same person.
