Ferris

Ferris is a surname used as a first name, with more than one family history. In Irish and Scottish contexts it can relate to the Fergus family, whose older elements concern a man and vigor or strength. In English surname history, it is also connected with Ferrers, a name associated with French places bearing iron-related names.

These routes explain why Ferris is sometimes given several different meanings: they belong to different surname origins, not to one combined translation. The fictional Ferris Bueller gives the first name an especially familiar association through the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For a family using an inherited Ferris surname, genealogical records can identify the relevant route; for other families, the surname and film associations may be the main points of connection.
