Fox

Fox is an English animal word that also occurs as a surname. As a given name, it can refer directly to the animal or preserve an existing family name. The familiar cultural association with cleverness is symbolism, rather than a literal translation or a prediction about the child who bears it.

Fox Mulder in The X-Files is a recognizable fictional bearer, though the English word and surname are much older than the television series. With three letters and one syllable, Fox is usually used without a shorter form. A family choosing it for an animal connection may compare it with other direct nature names, while a surname connection gives it a more personal history.
