Frances

Frances is the English feminine form in the Francis name family, ultimately associated with someone French or from France. The older name passed through Latin Franciscus. Its direct geographical meaning is more precise than treating “free” as the only translation.

Fran, Franny, and Frankie give Frances several informal options. Francis is the customary masculine spelling in modern English, although the two were not always distinguished so consistently in earlier usage. Francesca provides an Italian related form. Families preserving an ancestral name may find the e or i important, even though Frances and Francis usually sound alike in English.
