Francesca

Francesca is an Italian feminine form in the Francis name family, traditionally referring to someone French or from France. The frequently repeated “free” interpretation comes from a different historical association with the Franks and should not replace the more direct name-family meaning.

Francesca appears in Dante’s Inferno and as the heroine of The Bridges of Madison County. These literary connections come from very different stories. Frankie and Cesca offer contrasting short forms, while Frances is a related English alternative. Families can keep Francesca in full when its Italian sound is central to the choice, with or without an everyday nickname.
