Frank

Frank is both an independent name associated with the Franks and a familiar short form of Francis. Through Francis, it carries the historical sense “Frenchman.” It can also shorten Franklin, which has a separate surname history. The often-listed meaning “free man” should not be used as a universal explanation for every route to Frank.

Its single syllable and firm consonants give Frank a concise shape, while Frankie offers a more informal everyday version. Families honoring a Francis can use Frank directly or retain Francis as the full name. The English adjective frank, meaning candid, adds an appealing association for some parents, but that association should be distinguished from a promise about personality.
