Fredrik

Fredrik is the Swedish and Norwegian form of Frederick. Its Germanic roots combine peace with an element meaning ruler, producing the familiar interpretation peaceful ruler. This spelling removes the extra vowel found in Frederik and Frederick while preserving the same inherited compound.

An eighteenth-century Swedish king bore the name Fredrik, giving this particular form a royal association as well as its wider European history. Fred is an established short form in Swedish and Norwegian, and Fredrika is a related feminine form. The surname forms Fredriksson and Fredriksen also show the name's place in Scandinavian family history, referring to descent from a Fredrik. For a family with Nordic connections, the spelling can therefore be meaningful both as a given name and as a link to an inherited surname.
