Gaspar

Gaspar belongs to the same name family as Caspar and Jasper and is established in Spanish and Portuguese. Its deeper origin is usually connected with a word for a treasurer, transmitted through older languages including Persian. The exact route is not completely secure, so “treasurer” is best presented as the traditional explanation rather than an unquestionable translation.

Christian tradition gives Gaspar a particularly recognizable story as one of the Magi who visit the infant Jesus. The Gospel of Matthew describes the visitors but does not supply the familiar individual names; those developed later. Gaspar therefore carries a long Christmas association without being a personal name explicitly recorded in that Gospel. Italian Gaspare offers another close language form within this same historical and devotional family.
