Gentry

Gentry is an English word and surname used as a personal name. Historically, the gentry were people of social standing, especially landowning families below the titled nobility. That specific class meaning is more precise than treating the word as a general synonym for kindness or good character.

As a first name, Gentry can be chosen for its surname style or an inherited family connection, without implying a claim to social rank. Jentry is a modern spelling that emphasizes the initial sound for English readers. The word’s historical meaning and a present-day family’s reason for choosing it are separate: a surname passed down through relatives need not function as a title.
