Gisele

Gisele is especially established in Portuguese-speaking Brazil and belongs to the same family as French Gisèle and Giselle. The older Germanic element gisl refers to a pledge or hostage. In early naming traditions, that word related to the guarantees and obligations surrounding agreements, giving the name a historical meaning rather than a modern romantic phrase.

Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen brought this particular spelling to international attention. The unaccented Portuguese form should not be treated as having exactly the same pronunciation everywhere as French Gisèle; language makes a difference even when the letters look similar. Gisela and Italian Gisella are further relatives. Together, the forms show how a Germanic name developed recognizable identities across several European languages and later in Brazil.
