Gisela

Gisela belongs to an old Germanic name family built around an element meaning pledge or hostage. In its historical setting, that vocabulary could concern a person given as security for an agreement.

Forms of Gisela are used in German, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese, with different pronunciations despite the shared spelling. French Giselle and Italian Gisella are close relatives, while Gisa is an established German familiar form. The broad European history gives families several ways to preserve the same name across languages. Gisela's final a can make the full form feel distinct from Giselle, but the linguistic root remains the same rather than acquiring a separate meaning from the ending.
