Gisella

Gisella is an Italian form of Giselle, rooted in the Germanic element gisil, meaning pledge or hostage. In older naming contexts, that word belonged to the world of agreements and guarantees, rather than the romantic qualities that the name’s sound may suggest today. The double l and final a give Gisella its particular Italian form.

Giselle and Gisela are related spellings with different language histories, while Hungarian Gizella belongs to the same wider family. Those forms can be useful when tracing an inherited name across family records. Gisella has also been borne by writers, performers, and other public figures, so it functions as an established full name rather than a recent decorative variation. Its connection to Giselle makes the family resemblance easy to recognize while retaining a distinct ending.
