Griselda

Griselda is best known through a medieval story about a woman whose husband repeatedly tests her patience and obedience. Boccaccio included her in the Decameron, and Chaucer retold the story in the Clerk's Tale. Its treatment of marriage can feel troubling to modern readers, but the character's endurance made the name a lasting part of European literature.

The name is often explained through Germanic elements for “grey” and “battle,” although that derivation is uncertain and the name is not securely documented as an early Germanic personal name. Its literary history is much firmer than its literal translation. Later composers, including Vivaldi, brought Griselda's story to opera. Grisell and Grizell are related English and Scottish forms, while Zelda is an established shortened form with a very different sound.
