Gus

Gus is an established short form used for several different names, including Augustus, Angus, and Gustave. It can also be used for Augusta. Those longer names do not share one origin, so the meaning “one strength” applies to the Angus connection rather than to every Gus.

Literature provides a playful example in T. S. Eliot’s Gus the Theatre Cat, whose full name is Asparagus. That fictional expansion illustrates the flexibility of the short form without becoming its etymology. Families can choose Gus directly as a complete name or preserve a particular longer family name, using that original form to explain the meaning they intend.
