Ozzie

Ozzie is a familiar form used with several longer names, including Oswald, Osmond, and Oscar. Because those names have different histories, Ozzie does not have one meaning that fits every use. Divine elements in some Os names and the proposed animal element in Oscar should not be combined into a new phrase.

Ozzy is the closest spelling alternative. Ozzie can also stand as the official given name, keeping the affectionate form without requiring a longer version. If it honors an Oswald or Oscar, explaining that relationship gives the short name a more precise story. Choosing between Ozzie and Ozzy is chiefly a spelling decision rather than a change of linguistic origin.
