Oswald

Oswald combines Old English elements referring to a god and to power. Saint Oswald, the seventh-century king of Northumbria, gives the name an early royal and religious association. The related Old Norse form Ásvaldr belongs to the same wider Germanic naming tradition, while Osvald and Osvaldo show its development in other languages.

There is a playful side to the name as well: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is an early animated character, and Oz, Ozzie, and Ozzy are established short forms. Those options give a family a broad choice between a substantial historical name and a brief everyday nickname. The complete form also appears in literature, including Shakespeare's King Lear.
