Haddon

Haddon is an English surname taken from places with that name. Several are explained through Old English words for heathland and hill, giving the familiar meaning heath-covered hill. A different Haddon may incorporate an older personal name instead, so the exact place in a family history matters when the surname is being interpreted.

As a first name, Haddon keeps that place-name background intact. The landscape image is of open heath on rising ground, rather than a modern invented nature compound. Families with an inherited Haddon surname may be able to connect it with a particular locality, while others may simply value the established form. Its meaning is strongest when presented as a geographical history with more than one possible local source.
