Hagen

Hagen is an old German name associated with the element hag, meaning an enclosure or enclosed ground. It has a particularly strong literary history through the medieval German epic the Nibelungenlied. In that story, Hagen is a formidable figure whose actions include the killing of Siegfried, giving the name a dramatic rather than uncomplicated heroic association.

That background makes Hagen relevant to families interested in German literature or older Germanic names. Its two-syllable shape feels quite different from the longer compounds common in that tradition, yet its history is substantial. The initial consonant and final -gen may be pronounced differently by English and German speakers, so it helps to establish the intended sound. The name's literal landscape-related root and its literary character are separate parts of its story.
