Haider

Haider is a spelling of the Arabic name Haydar or Haidar, meaning lion. It is especially familiar through Urdu and other South Asian naming traditions. The animal meaning can carry associations with courage, but brave is an interpretation of the lion image rather than a separate literal translation of every form of the name.

Haydar is closely associated with Ali ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, and this connection gives the name particular religious significance for many Muslim families. Haider preserves that history in a spelling familiar to English readers in several countries. It can therefore work as both an animal name and a name of religious remembrance. The importance a family gives each layer will depend on its own cultural and spiritual tradition.
