Halley

Halley is a surname name with several family histories, so it does not have one translation that fits every bearer. English and Scottish examples may be related to Alley or Hawley, while another Scottish branch comes from a place in Orkney. Irish families have separate Gaelic surname routes. Its best-known association today is astronomical rather than a single landscape meaning.

Halley's Comet is named for the astronomer Edmond Halley, who recognized that earlier sightings belonged to a returning comet. Its orbit brings it back roughly every seventy-six years. That connection can make Halley an appealing name for a family interested in the night sky or scientific discovery. The spellings Haley, Hailey, and Hallie may look similar, but they should not automatically be treated as interchangeable versions of every Halley surname tradition.
