Halston

Halston is an English surname with more than one historical route. One points to the place called Halston in Shropshire, whose name has been interpreted as a contraction of holy stone. Another surname route comes through an older personal name, so the place explanation need not apply to every family bearing it.

The fashion designer known as Halston made the name especially recognizable in twentieth-century style; it was his middle name. Actor Halston Sage supplies a familiar example of it in the first-name position. Those cultural associations sit alongside the older surname history. For parents, Halston can preserve a family name or a fashion reference while retaining a substantial, established surname form.
