Harland

Harland is an English surname used as a given name, closely connected with Harlan. The surname has been traced to more than one place name, so there is no single translation that explains every family. Proposed first elements include words for gray, hare, or rocky ground, joined with land. The secure common thread is its connection with a place or landscape.

Harland Sanders, the founder associated with Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a recognizable bearer of the full spelling. The final d gives Harland a different written finish from Harlan, although the relationship remains clear. Families using it to preserve a surname may have a more specific local history than a general name description can provide. That family evidence can be especially meaningful for a name whose origins follow several geographical routes.
