Herman

Herman is a Germanic name formed from elements meaning army and man. The spelling Hermann is familiar in German, while Herman is used in English and other languages. Its history belongs to the older tradition of building personal names from meaningful elements connected with social roles, warfare, and family aspirations.

American writer Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, provides a major literary association with this spelling. Armand and Armando belong to the wider name family in French and Spanish or Italian, offering quite different sounds from the same older roots. For parents considering a family honor name, Herman can preserve the form used by an ancestor, while those relatives show how the name changed as it moved between languages.
