Hero

Hero has both a classical personal-name history and a direct English word association. In Greek legend, Hero is the woman loved by Leander, who swims across the Hellespont to visit her. The personal name’s origin is uncertain, even though it resembles the Greek word behind English hero.

Shakespeare also used Hero for the daughter of Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing. Those literary bearers are women, while the English word can inspire a name for a boy or a girl. A family may therefore be choosing a classical character, a Shakespearean connection, or the idea of courage expressed by the everyday word. These are related cultural associations, but they should not be flattened into one literal translation such as demigod.
