Holly

Holly is an English plant name associated with the evergreen shrub, often recognized by its leaves and red berries. Its use in Christmas decoration gives it a seasonal association, but “holy day” is not the literal meaning of Holly. The plant and the religious adjective have different histories.

Hollie is a spelling alternative used as a personal name, while Holly keeps the ordinary botanical spelling. Families may choose it for nature, a winter birthday, or a relative. The full two-syllable form is already concise. A Christmas connection is optional rather than a requirement for someone bearing the name.
