Hugh

Hugh comes through a Germanic name element associated with the mind or spirit and is closely related to Hugo. It has a long history in English, including medieval use after the Norman Conquest. Hugh has also been used as an English equivalent for certain Gaelic names, whose own meanings are separate.

Huw is a familiar Welsh form, and Hew offers another spelling comparison. Actors Hugh Grant, Hugh Laurie, and Hugh Jackman make the short name recognizable in modern culture. Its four letters usually represent one syllable in English. Families tracing a Hugh in older records may need the original language to identify which naming tradition applies.
