Hutton

Hutton began as a place-name surname, referring to a settlement on a ridge or projecting piece of land. The old settlement ending appears in many English names, while the first part describes the local terrain. Families associated with such places carried the name forward as a surname before its later use as a first name.

Scottish geologist James Hutton gives it a substantial scientific association, and designer Hutton Wilkinson is a bearer in the first-name position. Its two syllables place it beside other familiar surname choices without making it a shortened form of Hudson or Hunter. A geographical connection, a family surname, or one of those cultural references can each provide a clear reason for choosing it.
