Huxley

Huxley comes from an English surname associated with a place in Cheshire. The older place name includes an element for a woodland clearing; the first element may be the personal name Hucc, although another interpretation has been proposed. “Inhospitable place” is therefore too definite a translation for the name’s whole history.

Writer Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World, gives the surname a strong literary association, while other members of the family are known for scientific work. Hux is a straightforward shortening of the modern first name. The x and ley ending preserve the recognizable surname shape even when Huxley is used independently.
