Ina

Ina is an established familiar form taken from names such as Martina, Christina, and Carolina. Because those longer names have different origins, Ina does not have one meaning that applies to every bearer. Its history often begins with the ending of a name becoming the form used most naturally within a family.

Over time, Ina has also been chosen as a complete given name across several European languages. A family may use it to honor a relative with a longer ina-ending name, or simply continue an existing Ina from an earlier generation. Its pronunciation varies between languages and even between English-speaking families, so that inherited spoken form can be an important part of its identity.
