Indiana

Indiana is an American place name, best known from the state. Its formation uses Indian in the historical European term for Indigenous peoples of the Americas, with an ending used in geographical names. It is therefore a colonial-era place-name construction rather than a word from one Indigenous language.

As a given name, Indiana has an especially recognizable fictional bearer in Indiana Jones, the archaeologist of the adventure films. The nickname Indy comes directly from that character and is also used by families outside the film connection. Indiana can express a link to the state, a family’s travels, or a favorite story. Its place-name history and the later film association provide two distinct reasons someone might choose it.
