Indigo

Indigo is an English color and dye word with a history leading back to a Greek term for an Indian product. The dye was traditionally obtained from plants, giving the name a natural as well as a color association. Its familiar blue-violet image is more immediate than the older geographical meaning.

Indie or Indy offers a short form, while Indigo itself has three distinct syllables. Musical associations include Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo and the duo Indigo Girls. The word also appears in speculative spiritual ideas, but those claims are not part of the name's established linguistic meaning. Parents can choose Indigo for the color, the plant connection, or its sound without adopting those unrelated beliefs.
