Irvin

Irvin comes from a surname that can be related to either Irving or Irwin. The Irving route leads to the Scottish town and river of Irvine, commonly explained through older elements for green water. The Irwin route instead reaches the Old English personal name Eoforwine, with elements for boar and friend.

These distinct histories mean that the same spelling can carry different family connections. Irvin should therefore not be reduced to one universal translation such as handsome. Director Irvin Kershner, known for The Empire Strikes Back, is a recognizable bearer of the exact given name. For parents considering Irvin as an ancestral choice, a family’s own surname records may help identify which of its older routes is relevant.
