Isa

Isa is the Arabic name for Jesus and has an established place in Islamic naming. The same spelling can also occur as a short form of names such as Isabel or Isabella in other languages. These are distinct routes, so a meaning inherited from Isabel should not be applied automatically to an Arabic Isa.

Issa and Esa are alternative English-letter forms used for the Arabic name. Families choosing the short form of Isabella may instead value its connection to a relative or a longer formal name. Because the letters alone do not identify the intended background, explaining the original language or full-name relationship is more useful than assigning one universal translation.
