Janet

Janet developed as an affectionate form of Jane, related to the French name Jeannette, and shares the John family's meaning God is gracious. A name that began as a smaller or more familiar form has long stood independently. Its history in Scotland is particularly well established, giving Janet a place in Scottish family naming as well as wider English usage.

The relationship to Jane can be useful for honoring a relative without repeating the same name exactly. Jeannette shows another branch of the same development, with a fuller French spelling. Janet's final t gives it a crisp ending while retaining the gentle opening of Jane. For parents exploring older family records, it is a complete historical name rather than a newly invented extension.
