Janice

Janice is an expanded form of Jane, which belongs to the John family and the Hebrew meaning “God is gracious.” Its history has a particularly clear literary landmark: Paul Leicester Ford used Janice Meredith as the title and heroine of his 1899 novel. That connection helped establish a form that later became familiar as an ordinary English given name.

The added ending gives Janice a different rhythm from Jane while keeping the older name recognizable at its core. Janis is another established spelling, and Jan or Janie can serve as shorter forms. For parents looking back through family names, Janice may offer a connection to an earlier generation without losing the longstanding meaning shared with Jane, Joan, and other members of the wider name family.
