Jelani

Jelani has a distinctive place in modern African American naming. It was among the names presented to a broad American readership in a 1973 newspaper feature about African names, part of a wider interest in names that expressed cultural identity. The meaning mighty has often accompanied it, although its precise linguistic origin is uncertain.

One explanation connects Jelani with Jilani, a name associated with the Persian region of Gilan and carried in Arabic-speaking religious tradition. That possible route does not establish mighty as a literal Swahili translation. The name's modern history stands on its own, with bearers in music and other public life giving Jelani an identity shaped by the communities that have chosen it.
