Joan

Joan has two especially important language traditions. In English it is a feminine form from the John family, while in Catalan Joan is a masculine form of John. Both ultimately share the Hebrew meaning “God is gracious,” but the names are not pronounced in the same way.

Joan of Arc is familiar through the English form of French Jeanne, while the artist Joan Miró illustrates the Catalan name. Jo and Joanie are common English shortening options. Families choosing Joan should introduce the pronunciation they intend, especially across languages. Its compact spelling can carry either a long-standing feminine tradition or a masculine Catalan family connection without changing the underlying meaning.
