Joni

Joni is a familiar form of Joan, which belongs to the John name family and carries the traditional meaning “God is gracious.” It can also appear as a masculine familiar form related to Jon. Those uses explain why the same short spelling can occur in different family naming traditions.

Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell gives the name a particularly strong musical association. Compared with Joanie, Joni uses fewer letters while preserving a similar English sound. Joan makes the older name connection more visible, whereas Joni can place the familiar everyday form directly on the birth certificate. A family can value that musical namesake without treating music as part of the name’s literal meaning.
