Julien

Julien is the French form of Julian, ultimately derived from the Roman family name Julius. Several explanations have been proposed for Julius, including connections with youth and with Jupiter, but no single interpretation is secure. Julien’s French identity and Roman name-family connection are clearer than a confident one-word meaning.

Jules offers a related shorter option, while Julian is the closest English spelling comparison. The French pronunciation gives the ending a different sound from many English readings. King Julien in Madagascar and musician Julien Baker are recognizable cultural bearers, although their associations are separate from the name’s much older Roman and French history.
