Juliette

Juliette is a French diminutive in the Julia and Julius name family. Julius was an ancient Roman family name whose deeper origin remains uncertain. Interpretations involving youth, a downy beard, or Jupiter are proposals, so “youthful” and “sky father” should not be presented as two equally certain translations of Juliette.

The spelling distinguishes Juliette from English Juliet while preserving their close relationship. Julie can provide a shorter everyday form. French pronunciation places the rhythm differently from many English readings, making the intended sound worth sharing when a family uses both languages. The extra letters are part of the French form, rather than a requirement for a longer pronunciation.
