Kashmir

Kashmir is a geographical name associated with the Himalayan region. Several explanations have been proposed for the older place name, including a connection with the sage Kashyapa, but no single literal translation should be presented as settled. The region's cultural history is a more secure starting point than a romantic meaning attached to its sound.

The name also has a musical association through Led Zeppelin's song Kashmir. That reference is separate from the region itself and from cashmere, the related English textile word. Kashmir is used as a given name for boys and girls. A family connection to the place or its communities can give it a more personal story than choosing it solely for the song.
