Kassia

Kassia can be chosen as a spelling of the botanical name Cassia, associated with the aromatic bark used as a cinnamon-like spice. Cassia also has a separate Roman personal-name history as a feminine form of Cassius. These routes should be kept distinct: the spice meaning does not explain every historical person whose name is written Kassia or Cassia.

A particularly important bearer was Kassia, a ninth-century Byzantine hymn writer. Her hymn commonly known as On the Sinful Woman became part of Holy Week worship, giving the name a substantial place in religious and musical history. For a modern family, the name can therefore carry a botanical image, a classical name-family connection, or an association with an early woman composer and poet.
