Keaton

Keaton began as an English surname associated with places, rather than as a variation of Katherine or Keegan. Different explanations connect its first element with a personal name, a bird name, or a landscape feature, so a single translation such as “place of hawks” does not cover every family history. The familiar ending belongs to the settlement names behind many English surnames.

Its strongest cultural associations come from performers: Buster Keaton in silent cinema, and later Michael Keaton and Diane Keaton. Those connections give the name a recognizable history outside naming trends. As a first name it has been used for boys and girls, while preserving the spelling shared by those well-known surnames.
