Keegan

Keegan comes from the Irish surname Mac Aodhagáin, meaning son or descendant of Aodhagán. Aodhagán is a diminutive of Aodh, a personal name associated with fire. The full surname therefore describes a family relationship, rather than simply translating as the English word fire on its own.

Egan is a related surname form, while Keagan and Kegan are spelling alternatives for the given name. The double e in Keegan helps suggest its familiar English pronunciation. Used as a first name, it can preserve an Irish family surname or honor that heritage without requiring the child to carry a longer formal version.
