Kelly

Kelly comes from an Irish surname meaning “descendant of Ceallach.” The older personal name's meaning is uncertain, with interpretations involving conflict, a church, or brightness appearing in different accounts. These are alternatives rather than parts of one definition, so Kelly should not simply be labeled “war” without qualification.

Kelley and Kellie are nearby spellings, and Kel is a simple short form. Grace Kelly and Gene Kelly give the surname prominent associations in film and dance, while Kelly is also established as a first name. Parents using it as a family tribute may prefer the exact inherited spelling. Its two-syllable sound remains familiar even when the earlier surname history needs a little explanation.
